❤️ Human Story: Unfinished Business on Bayshore Blvd At The Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic

Every year, thousands line up along Bayshore Boulevard for Gasparilla weekend. But behind every bib number is a story. This year, Tampa Bay 28 shared one that stands out.

After suffering a heart attack at 38, Micheal Wallingford began cardiac rehab — a journey that led him to running his first Gasparilla race with permission from his cardiologist.

Over the years, he and his wife Kim turned running into something deeper:

Training partners. Teammates. Shared miles.

Then last year during an 8K, something felt off. His pace had dropped dramatically. Doctors discovered uncontrollable hypertension. Open-heart surgery followed.

2025 became a full recovery year.

And now — one year later — they’re back.

Back to the same start line.
Back to Bayshore.
Back with what Micheal calls “unfinished business.”

It’s not just about finishing a half marathon.

It’s about:

• Getting cleared to run again

• Trusting your body

• Doing the work in rehab

• And having someone beside you every step of the way

Gasparilla weekend (Feb. 21–22) will once again take over Bayshore — but this time, for the Wallingfords, it’s about something bigger than a medal.
