Tampa Bay Rays Explore New Stadium Sites Amid Uncertain Future |
Team Considers Multiple Locations as Plans for St. Petersburg Ballpark Falter |
Ken Babby, the new CEO of the Tampa Bay Rays, has revealed that the team is evaluating several potential sites for a new stadium within the Tampa Bay region.
Speaking at the MLB winter meetings in Orlando, Babby expressed confidence that, with a suitable public-private partnership, a new stadium could be operational by the 2029 season.
The Rays are currently committed to playing at Tropicana Field through the 2028 season.
This extension follows the team's temporary relocation during the 2025 season due to significant roof damage at Tropicana Field caused by Hurricane Milton in October 2024.
While specific details about potential new stadium sites remain scarce, discussions have predominantly focused on locations within Tampa.
These include the Hillsborough Community College campus near Raymond James Stadium, Ybor City, the Rocky Point golf course, and the Florida State Fairgrounds.
Recent developments have added complexity to the situation.
In March 2025, the Rays withdrew from a proposed $1.3 billion stadium project in St. Petersburg's Historic Gas Plant District.
The decision was influenced by unforeseen challenges, including the extensive damage to Tropicana Field from Hurricane Milton and subsequent financing delays that escalated project costs.
In response to the hurricane damage, the St. Petersburg City Council approved a $22.5 million project in April 2025 to replace the roof of Tropicana Field.
The goal is to have the stadium ready for the Rays' return in the 2026 season.
During the interim, the team is set to play the 2025 season at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, with renovation costs for this temporary arrangement expected to exceed $50 million.
Despite these challenges, the Rays' ownership remains committed to finding a long-term solution within the Tampa Bay area.
Access to approximately 100 acres of land is a primary consideration, as the team envisions a development that includes not only a stadium but also hotel, office, retail, restaurant, and entertainment spaces.
As the search for a new stadium site continues, the Rays' leadership is engaging with local officials and community stakeholders to identify the most viable option that aligns with the team's vision and the region's development goals.
The outcome of these efforts will significantly impact the future of baseball in Tampa Bay. |
